New Year's

Updated: Feb 17, 2023

Just a few days after I had arrived here it was New Year's. Luckily, a few of the friends I had made in Auckland also were in Tauranga, so we decided to celebrate together. There are quite a few Germans in New Zealand, so by coincidence all five of us are Germans. We met up at the store and got our stuff for a BBQ, and then headed to the beach. We imagined the weather would be nice and warm, but instead, we were met by harsh winds and it got quite cold. Everything almost flew away, so we had to be very careful to not lose anything. The grill was also not working properly, so it was quite a hassle to get the food ready. We did eventually get it done and had a delicious meal. We were freezing by the time we ate, so we decided to head to a bar. The drinks were quite nice. They even lit cinnamon on fire for one of our drinks, which was cool. We played card games until it was time to go back to the beach to watch the fireworks. To be honest they were quite disappointing. Fireworks are indeed unnecessary, but at least when you do them, do them properly. They were over after not even five minutes. One cool thing, though, was that we were the first people in the world to celebrate New Year's! None of us were tired, so we went to the beach, had some snacks, and talked. At like 2 or 3 am we decided it was time for us to go to bed. This New Year's was awesome. We laughed so hard our bellies hurt. I'm so thankful for meeting all these amazing people here.
